In this industry, the line between “reporter” and “stalker” is very thin. It may have been crossed this weekend as the local media tried mightily to break a Rams story before the regular cast of national pundits.

The most egregious offender was the unintentionally hilarious Tony Softli, who currently works as an NFL analyst for 101 ESPN. Softli spent some time on the other side of the rope as the Rams “VP of Player Personnel” from June 2006 – May 2010 and is an eligible answer on trivia answer sheets when asked, “Who is responsible for the current list of bums on the Rams roster?”

Like most sports analysts and reporters these days, Mr. Softli likes to use Twitter. He’s a must-follow, if you enjoy reading regurgitated news from ESPN and decoding misspelled information about Sam Bradford’s ankle. Anyway, he took to Twitter this weekend, in an attempt to break news about the Rams and head coach candidate Jeff Fisher.

Since decisions regarding contracts and new head coaches are kept purposely-private from the media, reporters are left to their own devices. Namely, creeping around team facilities in an attempt to decipher information. Any information. Needless to say, things got a little creepy.

Our sources tell us that Softli was camped out with a sniper rifle, a pair of binoculars and bag of Cheetos.

Okay, fine. That’s not entirely true. But 33% of it is.

—–

To adequately wet your appetite for sports bloggers discussing the what's what of St. Louis sports, here's a little snippet from the upcoming Episode 11 of the JoeSportsFan Show.

Episode 11 of The JoeSportsFan Show will officially air in its usual Wednesday afternoon time slot, but to adequately wet your appetite for two sports bloggers discussing the what’s what of St. Louis sports, here’s a little snippet from the show.

Yeah, you heard that right.

After making his debut on JoeSportsFa.com one year ago, Fafo has made it big time dancing in Hooters’ waitress short in front of Howie Mandel. Airs tonight (Tuesday) at 8pm CST on NBC.

Yep, that’s pretty much the professional apex for young, aspiring idiots that are featured dancing in the outfield grass at Busch Stadium.

Dream big, people. Dream big.

NOTE: Be sure to stop back on Wednesday afternoon for Episode 11 of the JoeSportsFan Show. Or, subscribe to our iTunes feed. Either way, you filthy animal.

Sadly, due to some uncorrectable technical difficulties….and an unfortunate wardrobe coincidence, the full run of Episode 8 has been laid to rest. Sad, but it had to be done.

Nevertheless, hopefully you’ll be pleased with a necessary dedication to the namesake of Episode 8; the great Gary Gaetti.

Due to our efforts in the podcasting and video realms, Mr. Sebek will lead a discussion at the national "Blogs with Balls" conference in Chicago on June 5th.

As of Friday, we’re happy to (formally) announce our participation in the “Blogs with Balls” sports media conference on Saturday, June 5th in Chicago, IL.

For those new to the concept, the “Blogs with Balls” conferences revolve around various panels of “industry experts” (+2 sleazy internet points) that discuss the evolving differences/similarities between new school media (e.g., blogging, social networks, podcasting, etc.) and traditional media (e.g., newspaper, radio, etc.).

Due to our efforts in the podcasting and video realms, Mr. Sebek (+1 third-person reference) has been chosen to lead a discussion entitled, “Leveraging Podcasting and Video to Build a Media Megabrand”.

The topics will center around, um, podcasting and video production. Good, you’re following along.

The underlying panel members for this particular topic should be tremendous, and certainly worth the price of admission (you know, if the entire day of sponsored Guinness isn’t enough to blow your hair back).

The Basketball Jones (The Score)

Jay Busbee (Yahoo! Sports)

David Jacoby (ESPN, Bill Simmons’ “Sports Guy” Podcast)

Ian Orefice (SI.com)

Michael Rand (Star Tribune)

Moderator: Matt Sebek (Joe Sports Fan)

Quite frankly, the panel is a tremendous sampling of the nation’s most talented sports audio/video podcasters…and I’m extremely honored to be a part of the action.

Send us an email at info@joesportsfan.com if you’re planning on making the trip….or if you have questions about the event. Speaking personally, I participated/attended the first two events (New York and Las Vegas, respectively), and they’re a fantastic mix of content and networking value.

Here’s a small sample of Blogs with Balls 2.0 in Las Vegas…

Sebek and Bacott will both be partaking in the weekend festivities. No “official” word from Softball Guy. He told us the Chicago summer softball leagues are substandard, so he showing his face in and around the Windy City is not likely.
