Earlier today, the Cardinals announced their “Stand for Stan” campaign. In short, the objective is to inspire President Obama to present Cardinal legend Stan Musial with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the most prestigious accolade an American civilian can receive.
Cardinals President Bill DeWitt II said the plan, which has been brewing internally for a few years, was originally meant to stay, “low key”. In accordance with today’s announcement, the plan is quite the contrary. Using internet means (e.g., Twitter, Facebook, etc.), the Cardinals intend to create a groundswell of support for the movement – which we can certainly appreciate.
The key attribute in the Cardinals social networking strategy is something they’re calling “Flat Stan,” a graphical cut-out of Stan Musial that rivals the immortal “Flat Stanley Project“. The Cardinals encourage their supporting fan base to print out “Flat Stan” and take pictures of him throughout town.
Truth be told, we’re smitten for the idea; from the sophistication and meaning of the end-objective…to the simplicity of the means.
All great intentions that could lead to Stan The Man receiving the highest honor in our land.
And, of course, if successful, it will lead to increased self-righteousness of the “best fans in baseball”.
